Experience Alberta’s good-natured and welcoming breweries and distilleries with our hosts who enjoy a satisfying drink as much as you. This tour will take you west of Calgary along the rolling foothills of the Bow Valley Cowboy Trail to the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains. You will experience the western culture of Cochrane to the community and environmentally free spirited folks of Canmore and Banff. Witness the region’s rich history and realize the crazy lengths brewers and distillers go to for the love of beer, spirits and soda! Aside from Alberta’s passionate owners, our craft scene has been influenced by our fresh mountain water and locally harvested crops producing unique and refreshing spirits and brews.
Your day begins in picturesque downtown at the base of the Calgary Tower, where you will meet your guide. After some quick introductions you will be whisked away to Cochrane, 18 KM west of Calgary. Known for its western culture and hospitality this one-time ranch community is the home to our first stop Half Hitch Brewing Company. Their establishment pays homage to western history whether the classic or modern cowboy. Here you will find three brothers and their sister working hard to fulfill a family dream. They will share their engaging, sassy story of the Farmer’s Daughter as you sample their tasty brews. All you need is a campfire with a strumming guitar, under the starlit sky to make this scene picture perfect!
You will continue your journey enjoying the stunning scenery as the landscape quickly transforms from the gentle rolling slopes of the foothills to the impressive, awe-inspiring strength of the mountains. Your views will be completely immersed by the Rockies as you arrive at Grizzly Paw Brewery. No need for bear spray here. These folks welcome any visitor wanting to try their beer or soda with a warm, yet firm bear hug. Impressive as the mountains, the beautiful timber framed brewery has a remarkable presence. After samples of their beer and soda we continue the Grizzly Paw story by jumping over to the Grizzly Paw Restaurant. This is the location of the original brewery and where you will enjoy some local cuisine with a pint or soda, of your choice.
Canmore is a hot bed for craft producers, not only breweries but distilleries as well! After your bellies are satisfied there is a quick five minute ride to the next stop – the Canmore Brewing Company. Originally from eastern Canada these folks enjoy the outdoors which they respect and love. This passion is apparent in every beer they craft.
Our last mountain stop is Banff Brewing Company and Pub located right in the heart of Banff on the trendy Banff Avenue. A true Alberta success story with four locations scattered across the province, every location praises their beer as fresh, modern, honest, and innovative. Enjoy some stories and beer with your guide who believes there is an occasion for every brew.
As we head back to Calgary relax and enjoy the true Alberta scenery transformation melt away from ridged mountains, sloping foothills to the expansive prairie and agricultural rich farm land. Your last stop of your adventure will be at Bottlescrew Bill’s, only a two minute walk from the Calgary Tower. This iconic establishment is a pioneer and trail blazer in their own right. Established in the early eighties they were the first pub in Calgary to allow local craft beer on tap. Now with over 300 beers on their menu local, national and international alike they are the ultimate ambassador for the craft beer industry. Enjoy some appetizers and two more pints as our guide says, “Adieu,” and takes his leave. If you want, feel free to stick and enjoy dinner; the night is still young. If you feel adventurous, ask your Bottlescrew Bill’s server about their unique 80 beers Passport Program.
